Richard A. Decker was born on July 23, 1948 to Walter and Margaret Decker. He has a sister Carol Ashton, a brother Robert (Farrell ’69) and another brother Thomas. Richard is a native Staten Islander who attended St. Mary’s of the Assumption grammar school and graduated in 1962. He then went on to attend Monsignor Farrell High School where he played basketball on the Freshman team, as well as three years on the Varsity Basketball team. He graduated from The College of Staten Island with a B. S. in Economics. He was drafted to serve in the United States Army in 1968. He was sent to Vietnam and served in the 101st Airborne Division. Richard was then discharged, returned home and married Susan Gallagher in 1971. They had three children, Deborah, Kathleen and Daniel. He worked as a manager for the United States Postal Service for 35 years.
Richard played sandlot baseball and touch tackle for many years. He has coached various levels of baseball and basketball for many years. He was also actively involved in the Blessed Sacrament Titan League, where he held many different positions, including President. Richard was also the Commander of the Lodge Pignata American Legion Post, where he is life member.
Richard has continued his dedication to Monsignor Farrell High School by assuming the role of “Class Rep” for the Class of 1966. For the past 39 years, he has coordinated a high school reunion every five years. In addition to the reunion, he has organized numerous backyard parties and golf outings for his Farrell ‘66 classmates. He also started the Jimmy Re Golf Club in 1988. It has grown to over 100 members for its annual trip to Ocean City, MD. One-third of the membership are Farrell ‘66 graduates. This event is another reason why our group stays so close! Currently, Richard is a retired grandfather. He has six beautiful grandchildren: two grandsons, Ryan and Timothy, and four granddaughters, Kelly, Mary-Kate, Emily and Grace. They take up a lot of his time, and he thoroughly enjoys every minute of it!
